A LIFE IMMERSED IN CLAY
Inspiration Statement
A life immersed in clay has offered an opportunity for the exploration
and evolution of ideas, forms and techniques.
I have been inspired by pottery traditions from around the world.
Their vitality derives from direct simplicity and centuries of experience and evolution.
My pottery is designed for use and celebration in the small daily rituals, preparing, cooking and serving food.
I enjoy the rhythm of mixing clay,
forming and finishing the pots, developing new glazes,
firing the work and finally exploring new markets.

GLAZE & FIRING
Techniques
The glazes I use are inextricable from my firing process. My work is fired to 2300 F in a propane fueled kiln
with a carbon rich atmosphere which is called a reduction firing. This atmosphere produces a subtle
but distinctly warm and integrated quality to the glazes.
I formulate and mix my own glazes from raw materials - minerals ground to a fine powder -
feldspars, silica, dolomites, lithium's and various clays.
The colors derive from cobalt, copper, iron, manganese and chromium.
These combinations produce a translucent glaze with a soft satin feel to the touch.
There is always a small and welcome variety in each firing that reflects this process.
These glazes are non-toxic, durable and intended for daily use in all kitchen activities.
